L'auteur traite essentiellement de la construction politique et économique du pays sans oublier l'aspect culturel.
Ce premier volume donne les clés pour mieux comprendre le Japon contemporain et s'achève sur les deux bombardements catastrophiques d'Hiroshima et de Nagasaki avec la capitulation du pays engagé dans la seconde guerre mondiale.
C'est très intéressant parce qu'il nous permet de nous initier à un monde très lointain en donnant envie d'en connaître encore plus.

Edwin O. REISCHAUER

Né à Tokyo de parents américains, professeur à Harvard, codéveloppeur, avec George M. McCune, du système McCune-Reischauer de romanisation de la langue coréenne. Ambassadeur des Etats-Unis à Tokyo de 1961 à 1966. Spécialiste mondialement connu du Japon.
